ABOUT Anse La Raie

Located in the northeastern part of the island, the gigantic lagoon of Anse la Raie is a place of choice for almost all watersports disciplines. A sheltered cove surrounded by small rocky islands is the perfect place to learn how to sail. The bottom, muddy and shallow, is ideal at low tide for beginners to learn how to sail. More experienced riders can go out of the bay and have fun in this enormous playfield. The passes (chanels in the reef to the deep sea) are also very dangerous places, try to avoid sailing close to them and try to have someone watching over you on the beach when sailing as a safety measure.

Anse la Raie often welcomes some of the best young local freestyle rippers, and the show can be exhilarating! The spot is also amongst the favourites of freeride and slalom lovers when conditions are good. Some parts of the lagoon can get very shallow, so it is better to avoid windsurfing at low tide. Wave riders will find a fun little right hander on the edge of a reef pass. This break works better in wintertime. We strongly recomend you to hire a security boat to watch over you if you decide to go into the waves.

Just south of the cove, there is an little swamp where a few bones of the dodo, the famous non-flying giant bird of Mauritius, where found. Moreover, Anse la Raie is not too far from Ile d’Ambre, where the emblematic bird was last seen in the 17th century. Old ruins from the French colonial period can also be found on this beautiful and natural island, as well as an amazing mangrove forest.

Taking the SUP out when the weather isn’t good for sailing is the one of the best ways to explore the stunning surroundings.
